I began my professional career in dental school at the University of the Pacific Dugoni School of Dentistry in San Francisco. This time in dental school was extremely formative, as I had the opportunity to spend thousands of hours refining my fine motor skills in the practice lab and in the dental clinic. This rigorous training has served me well as a cosmetic and reconstructive facial surgeon! Perhaps more importantly, in dental school I was exposed to the study of facial beauty, particularly how it relates to a beautiful smile. While I had always been interested in beauty in my artistic pursuits, making another person more beautiful was exhilarating. However, I was not content with simply creating beautiful smiles and I sought a four year surgical residency to be able to create beautiful faces as well.
I enrolled at Yale University/Yale New Haven Hospital for my residency in oral and maxillofacial surgery. In my training, I had the opportunity to treat facial trauma to the soft tissue and underlying skeleton and reconstruct acquired and congenital facial deformities such as cleft lip and palate, jaw deformities, midface deformities, and deformities of the forehead and skull. I benefited from extensive surgical instruction from renowned plastic and reconstructive surgeon, Derek Steinbacher, DMD, MD, the chair of the oral and maxillofacial surgery program, a mentor I credit with increasing my interest in facial cosmetic surgery through direct observation and hands-on techniques. During this time, I became interested in gender reaffirmation surgery as I learned of the disparity between the increasing needs of the community and the dearth of resources that are available.
I completed my formal training in a 1 year CODA-accredited cosmetic facial surgery fellowship at Monmouth Medical Center/Advanced Facial Surgery. Within my speciality, CODA-accredited programs are extremely sought after and only 2 positions are available nationally per year in cosmetic facial surgery. I was exceedingly fortunate to be able to work alongside Dr. Manolis Manolakakis performing extensive facial cosmetic and reconstructive surgery.
In 2020, I started Transformations Facial Surgery as a way to bring my passion for cosmetic and reconstructive facial surgery to the Bay Area, where I grew up and I call home. My surgical interests are cosmetic surgery, gender affirmation surgery, and jaw corrective surgery.
When I’m not in surgery, I spend most of my time with my wife Anna, and two boys, Magnus and Solomon. Parks, play dates, and pizza parties fill up most of my weekends. In addition to this, I enjoy working out, reading, road biking, yoga, skateboarding, and trying new restaurants. I volunteer a couple days a month at Highland Hospital teaching the residents and taking trauma call with the oral and maxillofacial surgery program.
